Technology is sky rocking and sometimes it seems like it is difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest. Our teachers in my opinion are underpaid, overworked and still required to keep up with their own professional development. So how do they handle all of the new technology and how do they go about adding it to their classroom with an already busy schedule. I can see where in the future that instructional designers can becoming increasing more involved in our school systems with assisting in integrating this type of technology into the classroom. If not already in place, I think that companies like Microsoft should look at hiring instructional designers to develop ready made instructional material for teachers to pick off the shelf and implement as they see fit into the classroom for these new technologies they develop. Not only will it create more users for their programs but it would feed our new generations hunger for technology.

Technology in the Classroom
I was reading an article "What Wearable Tech Could Mean for the Classroom" by Aiden Wolfe. In this article Wolfe introduces us to various new technology and some of the possibilities of its use in the classroom. This includes immersive learning with items like eye wear to produce augmented reality for the learners right in their own classroom. I experienced a little of augmented reality in my recent trip to the Smithsonian. I was able to take my iphone and place it over the bones of various animals and the animals would come to life and I could learn more information about them. I was a little disappointed that this service was very limited to the bones display and did not continue on to the dinosaur section. A few classes back I had looked into how the game Mindcraft could be used in the classroom and found that there are classes built solely around the game. With Mindcraft, instructors able to build historical monument with the learners and as they build discover the story behind it. Now Microsoft is taking it to the next level with a set of hololens that allows the user to get into the game as if they were walking in the game for real life. It also allows you to take the entire world and place it in front of you on your own table. Can you imagine the capabilities of this type of technology to allow the learner to experience history as if it was going on around them.
That kind of AR is still resource/time intensive to produce. I think that's going to remain a major limitation. It's cool stuff, but it's essentially a nice-to-have extra. Who's going to pay for it? And will it make a difference?
ReplyDeleteI agree, that type of AR is still advanced and I think that with a lot of items our teachers in the schools are already overworked. With technology changing so frequent or advancing I can see how it will be hard to keep up in the classroom and expensive. One area some of these companies could focus on when developing new technology is how they can help introduce it to the classrooms.
